The Role of Technology in Architecture: Tools and Trends to Watch

Updated: Jun 16, 2023

Architecture is a profession that has been around for centuries. With the rise of technology, though, architects have had to adapt and change the way they design buildings. Nowadays, there are many computer programs available to help architects with everything from creating blueprints to designing furniture. But what exactly are these new emerging software tools? In this article, we’ll explore some of the most popular technologies being used by architects today as well as what trends we can expect to see in the future.

The Role of Technology in Architecture

Technology is improving the way we design. It's making the process more efficient, collaborative and accessible to everyone.

The use of technology in architecture is not a new phenomenon: architects have been using computers since their invention in the 1950s to create 3D models of buildings and structures-and they've been using them ever since. But now there are many new tools available that are making it possible for us to do things we couldn't before-from sharing our ideas with colleagues around the world through virtual reality apps like SketchUp VR (Google) or Oculus Rift (Facebook), to creating digital mockups on our smartphones as soon as we get an idea so that other people can see them as well.

Software Tools and Trends to Watch

Software tools and trends to watch include:

  • 3D modeling software that allows us to create complex shapes and surfaces easily, like Autodesk Fusion 360 (Autodesk), which was recently released in beta. Furthermore, there is the emerging ability to take photos of our designs and import them directly into a CAD program, so we can view them from different perspectives or scale them up or down quickly without having to manually re-draw them on a computer screen.

  • The ability to import CAD files into other software tools, such as Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. These tools allow us to add color and textures to our designs so they look more realistic and lifelike.

  • The ability to share our designs online with others in real time, so we can get feedback and make changes quickly. For example, Google SketchUp (Google) allows us to create 3D models of buildings or structures and then share them with other people who are also using the software—even if they’re halfway around the world.

  • Lastly, the cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are all on the rise. These technologies can be used in conjunction with each other or individually to help architects design better buildings that are more sustainable and efficient.

AI, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

AI, VR and AR are becoming more common in architecture.

The use of AI is helping to make architecture faster and more efficient by making it easier for architects to model complex geometries, simulate how buildings will respond under different conditions (e.g., earthquakes), and create detailed drawings from raw data.

VR and AR are also becoming increasingly important tools in the architect's toolbox because they allow them to visualize their designs as if they were already built--something that was previously impossible without physically constructing a model or having access to advanced virtual reality software packages such as Maya or Cinema 4D (both popular 3D animation programs).

3D Printing & Building Information Modeling (BIM)

3D printing is a process of making a three-dimensional solid object from a digital model. It's used to create prototypes, tools and parts for use in the manufacturing industry. 3D printing is also used for architecture, art and medicine, but its most common application is in education where students can create models on their computers before printing them out as physical objects.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) allows architects to digitally represent all aspects of their designs including geometry, structure, MEP systems and sustainability information that can be easily shared with clients or other stakeholders throughout the design process so everyone involved will have access to the same data at any time during construction.

Overall, the field of architecture is changing rapidly. We are seeing the rise of new tools and technologies that can help us design buildings faster, but also more efficiently. The role of technology in architecture will continue to be an important one, as it allows us to explore new ways of creating buildings and spaces that were once thought impossible.
